VAN PERSIE SCORED THE FIRST GOAL AGAINST ARSENAL @ OLD TRAFFORD |
Manchester
United took the top spot after a 2 -1 victory against the Gunners on Saturday
at Old Trafford. United reached the top spot in the league table as Chelsea and
City had a draw on their away matches against Swansea and West Ham
respectively. Arsenal old boy Robin Van Persie scored the opening goal of the
match in the 3rd minute after a miss clearance from skipper Thomas Vermaelen.
The Red Devils had numerous scoring
opportunities including a missed spot kick by Wayne Rooney in the last minute
of the first half.
Defender
Evra increased the home sides lead with a header in the second half. Visitors
were reduced to 10 man in the second half as Jack Wilshere got the second
yellow for a tackle on Evra. The North Londoners had a consolation goal in the
stoppage time by play maker Santi Cazorla.
Van
Persie took the spot light with his goal but Right Winger Valencia had a great
game and beat Andre Santos on numerous occasions with his pace and tricks.
Manager
Alex Ferguson and defender Rio Ferdenand were furious with the last goal of the
match as they missed the chance to keep a clean sheet and it also reduced the
goal difference.
"It's unbelievable," Ferguson told
Sky Sports. "The chances we missed, we really should have put it to bed a
long time ago.
"You look at that scoreline, 2-1, you'd
think it was a close game but it wasn't a close game.
"I think there was a lack of urgency in
our game throughout, we were far too casual.
"It was an unusual Manchester
United-Arsenal game. I know there was a lot of bookings but it didn't really
get anywhere near the Manchester United-Arsenal games of the past.
"It was a strange game. I need to sleep
on it."
"It was an ideal start for Manchester
United of course, and it was good for Robin in particular.
"I thought he was fantastic today
[Saturday], his movement and penetration were fantastic.
"I thought the back four did really well
but after that, I'll just look forward to the next game."
