The new Manchester United manager
failed with a £12m bid for his former left-back yesterday.
But Moyes clearly knows what it will
take to lure the 28-year-old away from the Mercyside.
And it is understood Everton will be
tempted to do business if Manchester United up their offer by another £4m.
The move also casts doubt over
French man Patrice Evra’s future after 7½ years at Old Trafford.
The 32 year-old has been linked with
moves back to his native France with moneybags Monaco or PSG.
Baines joined Everton from Wigan in 2007.
The England international this week said he was looking forward to working with
Moyes’ successor Roberto Martinez.
But with the World Cup finals just
12 months away, the left-back may feel his best chance of edging out
Ashley
Cole for a starting place in Roy Hodgson’s team will be as a United player.
Baines was a target for United last
summer but they were put off by an £18m asking price.
Now, however, Baines has just two years
left on his Goodison deal and Everton may take £16m to allow Martinez to
strengthen his squad.
